Many people in the United States have jumped on the boat of free music through Spotify within the past few months.
So far, most are pleased with the huge database and ability to share your favorite tracks with all your friends. It started as a Swedish-funded site, headquartered in the UK, in 2008 and has slowly branched out to other countries ever since.
The way this works is pretty simple from a user’s standpoint. You create playlists and those who are your friends have the ability to listen to them. It’s like Pandora, itunes, Facebook and a cloud server all rolled into one. The prospects are exciting, of course, but those who pay for the service still have more freedom.
Once you commit to paying for spotify you’ll experience the ability to listen to playlists on capable mobile devices and in off-line mode. This is a step I haven’t taken in my own use of the spotify application, but there’s been quite a few instances where a mental wrestling match took place over whether or not to punch in the numbers on my credit card.
No matter what Spotify is worth a try. It’s free to start out and see if the application is worth your money.
UPDATE (11/30/11): Spotify announced some new changes, here’s an article from Wired.com with the story.
