Every one seems to want faster computers, faster cars, faster…well you get the idea. Now Google has decided to nab this same ‘need for [serious] speed’ and give it to those who own and host their own websites.
First thing is first: How does this work, really?
On Google’s FAQ page for the new service web master are instructed to, “ point the DNS CNAME entry to ghs.google.com.”
What this means is privacy and control may be compromised, and all for a little speed.
Don’t get me wrong I love the idea of faster website load time, but what’s to keep Google from tweaking the sites themselves? Also, what happens if Google gets hacked…again. That’s right, even though I love my Android OS phone, Google Chrome web browser, G +, account and gmail inbox…I still remember the great hack of 2010 (The New York Times reported some Chinese colleagues from a University hacked into gmail user accounts).
For those already using the service Google has promised a speed increase somewhere between 25 to 60 percent. Google plans on making this increase in speed happen by distributing the content to load across Google servers.
It’s only been a few days since the launch of this new optimization service but I have a feeling we’ll know the problems sooner rather than later.
